CPP in Men’s Division II Basketball Final Four
The institution that will be giving me my Master’s Degree in a year come hell or high water has made the men’s division II basketball championship tournament final four. I loved Whittier College, but our sports teams were shit. And I say that as a former member of two of their teams. We certainly had talent, but we weren’t going to win the D3 anytime soon. The only exception to that was the lacrosse team that made the D3 Championship tournament final four one year then faded into obscurity amid coaching changes and a bunch of other crap including bad recruiting. I may be the only one here, but I’ve decided I may as well celebrate the second time in my life that the sports team of a school I’m attending is legitmately good. Also, a kid I know is on the team. Go Jimmy! Anyways, I’m in the student center where they’re having a viewing party to watch the game. It is televised on CBS College, a channel I’m pretty sure nobody gets. We’re supposed to get food and there will be two, that’s right, two big screens. I may live blog parts of the game if I’m able to find a plug.
In other news, I decided that since I’m going to be here for a third year (boo, but hey, we’re in a recession anyway) I might as well have some pride, so I got myself a Cal Poly Pomona Science shirt. That’s right, they only have “science,” not biology, not chemistry, not “college of science,” just science. It has that “college” ring to it like that shirt from that movie (Animal House?). Ok, cross your fingers that we win. Send some good juju to Massachusetts, or for those of you in MA, send all your juju (good only). You folks in MA are closer, so I think your juju counts more.
A review of Oscar Night – Guest Blog
Today to change things up, I have a guest blogger for you all. The Oscars are one of the more important events of the year for Allison, so , I’ve asked her to write a review of the evening. You can compare and contrast her thoughts with mine from the live blog last night. And away we go. . . .
So I watched the Oscars this year at my coworker’s house. Scott’s wife is Australian, and the two of them did not watch any of the nominated movies this year nor did they know who most of the nominees or celebs were. I was worried that I would be mocked mercilessly, but as soon as they two of them saw Reese Witherspoon’s hair/makeup/dress, I knew they were in for the dishing, when they shrieked with displeasure at her hair’s asymmetry, her raccoon eyes and the kindergartener’s art project she was wearing.
Live Blogging the Oscar Red Carpet
So I’ve settled in to grade some papers and may as well begin my live blogging coverage with the Red Carpet. I’ll be updating with the highlights, and if you’d like to follow along, I’m watching the coverage on E!. After the jump, you can read from the bottom up if you need to catch up on my comments.
Live Inauguration Coverage
If nothing else, you can watch it here. Thanks Hulu!!
The holiday in photos again
So apparently I have to post holiday photos for today’s blog-off. I was under the impression that hope was just recounting what she did today which was process photos, something that is so day after christmas for me. But I did have a guest blogger on new year’s eve, which technically hope lost, although in the interest of fairness I am allowing her short post (just over 200 words). Pull up those Urkel pants because here we go. . . Read more »
Happy New Year’s!
Welcome to the 2009 edition of the blog-off. If nothing else, this shows how stubborn both Hope and I are and will continue to be in the new year. As with every year, the year started with a short viewing of the Rose Parade. There are quite a few reasons I can’t watch parades, and a a lot of reasons why this specific parade sucks. But I digress. We used to watch the Rose Parade only at the insistence of my mother, who outnumbered by males 3:1 was assaulted by football games everyday from Christmas to New Year’s. The Rose Parade was probably her one escape from sports, allowing her to start the new year at least a little sane.
Now onto why the rose parade is lame. First, it is in Southern California and if Southern California is lame, then any parades in Southern California should be lame as well by the property of transitivity. Second, you have super lame coverage by folks like Al Roker and Bob Eubanks. Roker is usually in new york and apparently very bad at reading descriptions of floats. Since his competition is Bob Eubanks, Roker wins and gets my view, but seriously, a guy from new york covering a parade in california? Really people, let’s get some locals out there. They seem to be the only ones that are excited about it anyway.
The only thing that keeps me watching at least this year is the fact that Cal Poly always has a float. This year it looked pretty sweet, so I’m trying to wait things out, but really, I may have to stab myself with a spork. Also, what the hell does a parade need a pace car for anyway? Oooh don’t go too fast parade floats. I can see it now – the parade shoots by at 90 mph and all you get is a blur of roses and maybe a single rose falls off and slowly drifts to the ground. One final rant, the color guard has wild horses that have been tamed and apparently the broadcasters thing that they have been “saved.” Yeah, and the Spanish saved the Aztecs with religion.
Ok, I hope everyone had a safe new year’s and is now enjoying the CSI:NY marathon or the Bones marathon rather than the Rose Parade.
Voting?
I am in line to vote…apparently the polling place on campus didn’t update their list and now I have to vote provisionally…grrrrr…..updates later
Update:It took 45 minutes for me to vote since so many Cal Poly students were voting and the list was so bad a lot had to vote provisionally even though the were registered! Lameness. I won’t go into my expectations for the outcome, but I hope everyone voted.
Even the earth is getting Political
In our current polarized political atmosphere, and especially in light of the upcoming election, it seems everyone has an opinion. Even the empty lot next to my house has an opinion. Read more »
Brandy and Justin get Married!!
Brandy and Justin, pretty much our best and only friends down here got married yesterday in a really nice ceremony that was followed by some super tasty BBQ. On only four days notice, they got a ton of people out and I think that really shows how awesome they are and how awesome everyone around them is as well. Since they had a dude taking pics, I broke out the lensbaby to see if I could get something just like this, and well while not perfect, I think it at least captured a nice moment. I wish the minister had gotten his dome out of the way, or at least into the blurred area. Congratulations guys!!!
